Sergio Pettis loses hard-fought boxing debut in India

Sergio Pettis went up against a much more experienced opponent and was competitive in his boxing debut, but came up short.

At Indian Pro Boxing League 2 in Hyderabad, India, on Friday, Pettis (0-1) lost a six-round unanimous decision (59-55, 60-54, 60-54) to home-country champion Sabari Jaishankar (12-3). The bout was contested at 160 pounds. The event streamed on DAZN.

The fight was competitive, but largely one-sided as far as scoring was concerned. Pettis struggled with the timing and head movement of Jaishankar, who clearly was the more experienced of the two in the craft.

“I feel great, man,” Pettis said on the broadcast. “I’ve got some things I’ve got to work on, but I had fun out there. I’ll come back and do it again, 100 percent.”

Pettis, 31, hasn’t competed in MMA since this past June and currently is under contract with PFL, which allowed him to take Friday’s match. While he doesn’t have an MMA fight on the books, Pettis will aim to snap a two-fight skid whenever he returns.
