Sergio Conceicao: AC Milan Appoint Former Porto Manager

Ex-Porto boss Sergio Conceicao has been named AC Milan manager after the Italian side sacked former boss Paulo Fonseca.

Former Lazio and Parma midfielder also spent time at the San Siro as a player – with Milan’s fierce rivals Inter.

The Portuguese coach joins AC Milan on an 18-month deal.

Having spent six years at Porto, Conceicao won 11 trophies in his home country before stepping down at the end of last season.

Sergio Conceicao Has A Huge Task With AC Milan

The 50-year-old will take charge of his first game with the Rossoneri on 3 January. Milan face Juventus in the first leg of the Italian Super Cup semi-finals.

It will be a divisive fixture in the Conceicao family, with Sergio managing against his son Francisco, who plays for Juventus.

Things have moved very quickly behind the scenes at AC Milan.

The club decided to sack former boss Fonseca on Monday morning – hours after they drew 1-1 at home to Roma.

A string of poor results have left seven-time European champions Milan eighth in Serie A. With the side 14 points below league leaders Atalanta and Napoli, those in charge felt a change was necessary.

Fonseca himself only took over in June. He replaced Stefano Pioli, but could not match last season’s form.

Milan finished runners-up in 2023/24, and won their first league title in 11 years in 2022.

Things are slightly better in Europe, though. With two defeats and four wins from their six Champions League games, they sit 12th in the new-look 36-team table.

Only the top eight teams qualify automatically for the last 16, so Milan will likely need to negotiate the play-off round before they reach that stage.

After travelling to Juventus, Milan host Cagliari on Saturday 11 January in Serie A.

They then visit newly-promoted Como before returning to Juventus once more for a league fixture on Saturday 18 January.
