Sergio Busquets proves Liverpool wounds are still deep as Twitter silence continues following Inter Miami move

MLS franchise Inter Miami have announced the free signing of Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets after his 18-year stay at the Spanish giants came to an end.

The midfielder announced his decision to part ways with Barca last month, days before helping the club to its first La Liga title in four years. He will link up with former teammate Lionel Messi upon both of their arrivals in Florida this summer.

Of course for many he will be remembered for his impressive trophy haul for club and country. Amongst Busquets' honours are nine Spanish league titles, three Champions League titles, three Club World Cups, the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship.

However, on the Red half of Merseyside, the Spain international's reputation hinges on one facet in particular - his social media activity.

To this day, a post just 24 hours prior to Liverpool's 4-0 second leg comeback in the Champions League semi-finals at Anfield remains Busquets' last activity on Twitter, apart from a reply to former Spain boss Luis Enrique.

Busquets had previously been very active on Twitter and posted that his side were 'ready' for the clash at Anfield, with Barcelona 3-0 up and perhaps showing a little too much confidence going into the second leg. The post has become synonymous with the famous victory, leaving supporters to wonder whether he will ever take to the platform again.

Days later he would go on to put the defeat into perspective for himself and everyone else associated with the club, after Barcelona played out their final home match of the 2018/19 campaign in front of a deflated, half-empty Camp Nou.

"We knew we had to play, but it was really difficult for everyone," said the Spaniard. "We wanted to be at 100% but it was a struggle because of what happened (at Liverpool).

"Hopefully the wounds which the club, the fans and the players have will heal.

"We're all hurting. I've lost titles, games, but I have never been dealt a blow like this. It's really difficult for everyone, even though it forms part of the game."

At the time, La Blaugrana were also gearing up for a cup final. Speaking to ESPN, the Anfield performance was clearly still weighing on his mind.

"We will come out of it together. We've got the cup final to come. The challenge ahead isn't a small one, either. Winning a double is no small thing but the wound from Liverpool is deep."

Notably, Barcelona have failed to reach the final four in Europe's top competition since, but have had success in others. As an Inter Miami player, Busquets will have to watch on to find out if his former employers can reach the pinnacle of European competition.
