Sergio Aguero questions "strange" Man City transfer amid Erling Haaland assessment

Sergio Aguero has questioned Manchester City ’s decision to sell forward Raheem Sterling to Chelsea this summer.

The Premier League champions sold England international Sterling to their domestic rivals in a £50million move earlier this summer. Aguero teamed up with the forward for six years in City’s attack and believes it was a “strange” decision by the club.

Sterling netted an impressive 131 goals in seven seasons for City – including a career-best 31 in the 2019-20 campaign – and helped the club to win 11 trophies in that timespan, including four Premier League titles. City legend Aguero said on his Twitch channel: "I don't understand the sale of Sterling, there are times they (City) make strange decisions."

Aguero also commented on the arrivals of fellow Argentine Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland at the Etihad. They are the first strikers to arrive at the club following on from Aguero’s exit from Manchester a year ago.

The Argentine hinted that the exit of Sterling would have an adverse impact on Haaland, and suggested that the Norwegian goal scoring sensation would require time to settle into the Premier League following two-and-a-half years at Borussia Dortmund.

After making his City debut against Liverpool in Saturday’s Community Shield clash, Haaland was frustrated coming up against a resolute Reds defence marshalled by Virgil van Dijk. Aguero continued: "He was too used to Germany, Haaland thought he was alone, then Van Dijk arrived and said 'welcome to the Premier League'."

Alvarez – an arrival from Argentine club River Plate – did find the net against Liverpool and the former City striker explained: "Julian sent me a message to find out how life is in Manchester, I told him that he was going to be very cold!"

Aguero was forced into early retirement due to health issues last season when he had to come off just 42 minutes into his first home start for Barcelona against Alaves in October and was taken to hospital due to breathing difficulties. The former City star was visibly struggling towards the end of the first half, laying down after clashing with an opponent in the penalty area.

Aguero returned to his feet and was assisted off the pitch but had been unable to return to training since due to ongoing medical treatment and monitoring, before being diagnosed with a heart condition that ultimately led to him calling time on his career. It was the arrhythmia uncovered by the medical tests forced Aguero to terminate his professional career, aged 33, and with just 165 minutes as a Barca first-team player.

Giving an update on his condition, Aguero did not give a definitive answer on any potential return to the sport and added “maybe if the heart is doing well.”
