Sergio Aguero endures nightmare flight to Qatar on plane full of raucous Brazil fans

Argentina legend Sergio Aguero was forced to endure a difficult flight to Qatar after he found himself with a host of Brazil supporters.

The former Manchester City and Barcelona star travelled to the World Cup ahead of the tournament beginning on Sunday but was accompanied by several fans, who were certainly in good voice. Aguero posted a short video on social media of his experience, in which he tried to remain incognito.

His facial expressions made it clear that he knew he was in for a long journey, whilst he also included the words "the whole trip like this". South American fans are known to create party atmospheres and the Brazil faithful will jet to Qatar full of optimism, with their side among the favourites.

But Aguero, who retired in December 2021 due to a heart condition, will also have high hopes for his home nation. The 34-year-old went to three World Cups as a player, reaching the final in 2014. Argentina head to Asia as the reigning Copa America champions having embarked on an unbeaten run that spans more than 30 games.

The former City man, who was offered a role with the national side, explained earlier this year that he didn't want the commitment and will instead head to Qatar as a fan. He told ESPN : “The invitation to be part of Argentina's staff was on the table. I spoke with Chiqui [Tapia, Argentina Football Association president] and I was clear with him about my goal to enjoy my time.

“I'm going to Qatar, but as a fan. I have a great relationship with everyone from the national team but I don't see myself in the coaching staff and with the players on a day-to-day basis. They are asking for a role that isn't for me right now. I had a talk with [Lionel Messi], he and [Lionel] Scaloni gave me an idea of what they wanted from me. I asked them for some time to think about it and then told Chiqui that I wasn't ready for that.

“I will be available for any event related to the Argentina national team, as an ambassador but I don't want a day-to-day responsibility with the team.”

Lionel Messi will almost certainly be playing in his final World Cup and is looking to emulate Diego Maradona by leading his country to victory for the first time since 1986. His Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Neymar will also be hoping he can win the World Cup with Brazil, who last won the tournament in 2002.

European teams have won the last four tournaments, with Italy, Spain, Germany and France lifting the trophy. Brazil and Argentina are among the favourites to win the World Cup and could meet in the semi-finals.
