Sergio Aguero admits he is considering U-turn after retiring on medical advice

Sergio Aguero has confirmed he is hopeful of a sensational return to playing football after being forced into early retirement due to health issues earlier this campaign.

The 33-year-old was forced off 42 minutes into his first home start for Barcelona against Alaves in October and was taken to hospital due to breathing difficulties. The former Manchester City star was visibly struggling towards the end of the first half, laying down after clashing with an opponent in the penalty area.

Aguero returned to his feet and was assisted off the pitch but had been unable to return to training since due to ongoing medical treatment and monitoring, before being diagnosed with a heart condition that ultimately led to him calling time on his career. It was the arrhythmia uncovered by the medical tests will force Aguero to terminate his professional career, aged 33, and with just 165 minutes as a Barca first-team player.

The striker’s time at the Camp Nou was short but eventful; he was unable to be registered initially due to the club’s precarious financial position and not being within their wage cap as proposed by La Liga. The Argentine then suffered a calf injury that prevented him for playing through the opening months of the campaign. Aguero then returned to action but only featured in four matches for the Catalan giants, scoring just one goal – a consolation against Real Madrid in October’s El Clasico defeat.

Aguero explained to Argentine media outlet Tyc Sports that he was optimistic that he would be able to return to the pitch in the future once his medical situation improves: “Yesterday it crossed my mind that I might be able to play football again The doctors told me that I have to spend five or six months without activity, but I already want to train again."

The former striker then went on to reveal that he had already received an offer from an MLS club, who had explored the possibility of his return to the pitch. Aguero, who insisted that he would be continuing to follow all medical advice, explained: “Inter Miami asked about me, but I refused. In two years? Let's see…”

Aguero scored a club-record 260 goals for Manchester City – whom he joined from Atletico Madrid in 2011 - winning 12 major trophies over the past decade. He also scored 41 goals in 101 caps for the Argentina national team.
