Serena Williams net worth as tennis star pledges £10million bid to buy Chelsea

Tennis legend Serena Williams has reportedly joined a bid to buy up-for-sale Chelsea FC.

She is said to be committing £10million to the bid to buy the Chelsea alongside F1's seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

The bid is being headed by former British Airways chairman Sir Martin Broughton and aims to take over the club, stuck in the financial mire after sanctions against current owner Roman Abramovich.

Williams is one of Tennis' most successful ever players and has an incredible 23 Grand Slam singles titles to her name, putting her only one behind list leader and Australian Margaret Court.

Serena's success means she has earned a huge amount during her career and she is considered one of the very best, tennis players of all time.

Serena Williams is reportedly worth a colossal £191 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

The tennis star, 40, is miles out in front on the earnings list for women's tennis, thanks to the 73 titles to her name.

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) say that she has earned the equivalent of £76 million from her championship success alone. Second on the list is sister Venus on a little over £32 million.

Allowing Serena to increase her enormous wealth is thanks in part to her endorsements including Nike, Wilson and Ford and she is also married to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

Forbes has a list of the sponsors that contribute to her wealth. They are as follows

  • AbbVie
  • Anheuser-Busch InBev

Can Serena Williams buy Chelsea?

Serena Williams has been savvy in her investments earned from her sporting endorsements and career prize money and would likely have the capital to invest in a bid to buy Chelsea.

Her net worth means she would not come close to having the billionaire sums required to buy the club outright, but is able to invest in a consortium.

The bid spearheaded by Broughton is one of three finalists being considered by US merchant bank Raine Group, who is overseeing the bid.

Forbes reports she has investments in 66 startups already through her venture capitalist firm Serena Ventures and "sits on the boards of Poshmark and SurveyMonkey's parent, Momentive".

Williams already has a track record in sporting ownership and has an estimated 0.5% stake in the Miami Dolphins NFL team.

In January it was announced that Williams would be investing in the Los Angeles-based women's football club Angel City alongside Eva Longoria and Natalie Portman.
