Sennheiser CX Plus True Wireless Earbuds Review: A great upgrade from its predecessor

Sennheiser has a long history in designing a wide range of high fidelity products, but probably most notable for their headphones and stunning audio quality.

More recently they have set their sights on wireless earbuds, and after the great reception from the CX 400BT and MOMENTUM True Wireless 2, Sennheiser has added another to their ever-growing roster.

The CX Plus True Wireless Earbuds is the successor to the CX True Wireless Earbuds. Like other products, in Sennheiser’s catalogue the CX True Wireless Earbuds were well received but owners noted several improvements they wanted to see if the earbuds had upgraded.

The CX Plus True Wireless Earbuds is a spitting image of the CX True Wireless Earbuds. They retain its bulky signature cubed shaped shell, with a glossy back panel that features Sennheiser’s logo.

The wide back panel is the ideal size for touch controls but the glossy finish is susceptible to scuffs and smudges. The ear tips feel really comfortable without being too invasive over long periods of music listening.

They also come with three extra sets of ear tips if these don’t quite fit. They may not be as sleek or compacted as other earbuds but they feel durable and fit snugly in your ears.

They come with an IPX4 rating which means they are resistant to rain or sweat but just don’t go swimming with them. Saying that the CX Plus definitely feels like it can double up as your exercise earbuds.

The CX Plus True Wireless Earbuds come with simple touch controls that give you full autonomy over the earbuds.

All the basic controls are covered for controlling music, answering calls and even activating the noise cancellation which is a nice feature.

They come fully equipped with ANC (Sennheiser)

These controls can be further customised in the Sennheiser Smart Control App to suit your needs.

The Smart control App also allows owners to customise several music settings from the EQ to bass boost, it’s really accessible and easy to understand.

The CX Plus includes an auto-pause feature that will automatically stop playing music once it comes out of your ear and resume when back in.

This is a subtle but great feature to include as it saves battery power and you don’t have to use your device to pause the music.

The earbuds feature the same 7mm TrueResponse Transducer drivers as the CX True Wireless and they sound very similar.

They still aren’t in the same league as the MOMENTUM True Wireless 2, but the audio quality is respectable for the price range.

It has up to 24 hours playback time with on the go charging (Sennheiser)

The main new feature for the CX Plus is the ANC, which should really be a feature for all earbuds at this price range. The earbuds already have a natural isolation from their bulky build but the ANC does provide that extra bit of noise cancellation.

The difference really isn’t that noticeable but it does as that extra support. I do think as this is one of the main new additions, this feature could’ve been much more prominent than it is.

Sennheiser has also added a transparency mode to the earbuds which does the opposite of ANC and increases the external noise.

This is great as it automatically pauses your music and allows you to have a greater awareness of your surroundings and engage in conversations without taking the earbuds out.

The earbuds have an average battery life of eight hours while the ANC is turned off. With the case, it has a combined life of twenty-four hours, which is great for long walks and hikes.

Having the ANC active throughout your listening time will shave off about two hours off its battery life.

Verdict

The CX Plus True Wireless Earbuds are another great entry into Sennheiser’s catalogue, the amount of customisation and clear sounding audio is always a massive bonus at this price tag.

However, the main selling point is the ANC which isn’t as prominent as it could be for earbuds of this price point.

The Sennheiser CX Plus True Wireless Earbuds is out now for £129.99
