Senior Tories in Wales back Boris Johnson and blame culture in Downing Street

Two Conservative MPs in Wales have given Boris Johnson their backing after he apologised in the wake of Sue Gray's report into gatherings in Downint Street.

The report by senior civil servant Sue Gray was released, in part at least, on Monday, January 31. It found failures of leadership and judgement. It also revealed that police are investigating 12 out of 16 events identified in the report. You can catch up on everything that happened here.

After making his statement, which you can read in full here., the Prime Minster faced nearly two hours of questions from MPs, before meeting members of his party in private.

We approached all Welsh Conservative MPs, and senior figures in the Welsh group, in the wake of that meeting to ask two simple questions.

1. Does the Prime Minister enjoy their support?

2. Was his apology enough?

Just two people have responded - Monmouth MP David TC Davies and Ynys Mon MP Virginia Crosbie. Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart did not respond.

David TC Davies, who is Monmouth MP and Wales Office minister, said the PM did have his confidence and in response to the second question said: "The apology on its own would not be enough but it will be followed with a police investigation and a commitment to change the culture in the Downing Street department."

When asked previously, Ms Crosbie said: "I am not one to comment on anyone's actions until I know all the facts. I will make my views known when the investigation into events at Downing Street is published. I welcome the Prime Minister apologising."

Today she has responded: "The majority of my constituents have been absolutely clear to me over the last few days that they want action from the UK Government on the issues that really matter to them that’s investment, jobs, the levelling up agenda and being part of the green revolution, including new nuclear Wylfa Newydd.

"The excitement about these big-ticket items has risen since the Prime Minister visited Anglesey last week and said he remains a fervent supporter of new nuclear power here on the island. I thank him for coming and giving real leadership on this crucial issue for thousands of local people.

"On Monday, the PM accepted the findings of the independent Sue Gray report and has assured parliament and myself personally that he will act swiftly and decisively on her recommendations. I welcome this."

Mr Davies is Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales and Ms Crosbie a Parliamentary Private Secretary in the same department.

We also asked Wrexham MP Sarah Atherton, Clwyd South MP Simon Baynes, Vale MP Alun Cairns, Preseli Pembrokeshire MP Stephen Crabb, Vale of Clwyd MP James Davies, Clwyd West MP David Jones, Brecon and Radnorshire MP Fay Jones, Aberconwy MP Robin Millar, Bridgend MP Jamie Wallis and Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams as well as Welsh Senedd Tory leader Andrew RT Davies and party chair Laura Ann Jones. No other replied.
