Senior State Department Official Andrew Miller To Depart

A senior State Department official, Andrew Miller, who has been dedicated to matters concerning the war in Gaza, is set to leave his position in the coming days. Miller currently oversees the Israeli and Palestinian portfolio at the department but is departing for personal reasons, as confirmed by sources familiar with his decision.

Miller's departure comes at a critical juncture as the Israel-Hamas conflict enters its ninth month, with the Biden administration expressing growing frustration with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel's handling of the war while also defending the country on the international stage.

According to sources, Miller cited feeling burned out and a desire to spend more time with his family, including his wife and young daughter, as reasons for his departure. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller expressed regret at Andrew's decision to leave, acknowledging his valuable contributions and expertise in the region.

Andrew Miller, who previously served as the Director for Egypt and Israel Military Issues at the National Security Council during the Obama administration, is known for his deep knowledge and experience in the region.

While several US government employees have resigned in protest over the handling of the conflict, Miller's departure is not believed to be linked to dissatisfaction with the administration's approach. His role became increasingly sensitive and complex following Hamas' attack in October.

Miller played a pivotal role in the Biden administration's executive order imposing sanctions on individuals and groups involved in settler violence in the West Bank. He also advocated for equal treatment of Palestinian-Americans in the visa waiver program for Israelis and facilitated the safe passage of an American service member's family members out of Gaza during the conflict.

Having joined the Biden administration early on, Miller has been a key figure advising on Middle East affairs. Despite facing health challenges, including a mild heart attack during his tenure, he has been instrumental in shaping US policy in the region.

Miller's departure marks a significant loss for the State Department, given his expertise and contributions to navigating the complexities of the Israel-Hamas conflict. His successor will inherit a challenging role that requires a deep understanding of the region and diplomatic finesse.
