Senior residents' group in Lanarkshire get away for the day with bus run

A group of senior residents from Newmains and the surrounding areas recently enjoyed an away day.

The SWELS (Seniors with Energetic Lifestyles) members went on a bus run and headed off to Stirling for a change of scenery.

Chairman Eddie McCann gathered the group’s members together for photographs outside the NCT Centre in Newmains before they set off for the day. And local councillor Nicky Shevlin who has been very supportive of the group was on hand to wave them off on their bus trip.

While in Stirling the SWELS members enjoyed a bit of shopping before tucking in to a high tea at the Golden Lion Hotel.

Secretary Tom Murray told Lanarkshire Live: “We’d like to thank Councillor Shevlin for his attendance before we left and also for his continued support, we had a brilliant day out. The trip went very well and over 40 members attended. It was nice to get away following all the lockdown with Covid etc."

The SWELS group meets twice a week at the NCT Centre in Newmains (Stuart Vance/ReachPlc)

The SWELS group meet on Mondays at 2pm for Chair Aerobics and Thursdays at 2pm for Tai Chi classes in the NCT Centre’s library. Classes are due to be suspended for a summer break at the end of June but will return on August 15 and 18 when new members will be made most welcome.

SWELS next project will be an afternoon Tea Dance on Tuesday, October 4 in the NCT building, please check the notice board in the centre for further information.
