Senior MP told off by Speaker for calling Suella Braverman 'unhinged'

A SENIOR Labour MP was called out by the Speaker of the House of Commons after she referred to the Home Secretary as “unhinged”.

It comes as Suella Braverman faces fierce criticism after she accused police of “double standards” and “playing favourites with protesters” ahead of a pro-Palestine demonstration in London this weekend.

Writing for The Times, she said she did not believe the marches were “merely a cry for help for Gaza”.

“They are an assertion of primacy by certain groups – particularly Islamists – of the kind we are more used to seeing in Northern Ireland,” she wrote.

“Also disturbingly reminiscent of Ulster are the reports that some of Saturday’s march group organisers have links to terrorist groups, including Hamas.”

Speaking in the Commons, shadow leader of the House of Commons said Braverman was “undermining the police while stoking up division”.

She added: “She’s unhinged. I ask the Leader (Penny Mordaunt) today. Does she agree with her that the police, police officers are playing favourites in this case?

“But the Prime Minister is so weak, he can’t reign her in. He’s so weak, he couldn’t even get his own ideas into his own King’s Speech.”

At this point, Speaker Lindsay Hoyle (below) intervened and said: “I’m not, I don’t like the term unhinged.

“I understand tensions are running very high but I do want us to try moderate the language.”

Powell then said she would “withdraw” the comment and ask the question in a different manner.
