Senior Islamic State leader killed in US-Iraq joint operation

Baghdad: The head of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria ( ISIS) was killed in a joint operation carried out by Iraq and US, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said. 

"The Iraqis continue their impressive victories over the forces of darkness and terrorism," Prime Minister said in a statement posted on X.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday informed that the head of the Islamic State, along with another unidentified member of the ISIS, was killed in the US-led operation.

"Today the fugitive leader of ISIS in Iraq was killed. He was relentlessly hunted down by our intrepid warfighters," Trump said in a post on X on Friday night. 

A security official said the operation was carried out by an airstrike in Anbar province, in western Iraq, CNN reported. 

The slain terrorist has been identified as Abdullah Maki Musleh al-Rifai, also known as Abu Khadija.

Abdallah Maki Mosleh al-Rifai, or “Abu Khadija,” was “deputy caliph” of the militant group and “one of the most dangerous terrorists in Iraq and the world,” according to the statement from Iraq.
