Paul Cleary, who has served for 29 years, has been appointed to the rank along with two others.

Garda Chief Drew Harris previously led the praise for Cleary’s “world class” investigation into monster Thompson for the murder of Daithi Douglas in Dublin’s south inner city in July, 2016.

As Det Supt based at Kevin’s Street Garda Station, in Dublin city, Cleary led the probe from day one and arrested Thompson in November 2016 - when he was on the run.

Thompson was jailed for life on August 31, 2018.
