The number of people attempting to reach Europe via irregular migration routes from Senegal has exploded in recent months. Since the start of the year, more than 30,000 migrants, mostly Senegalese, have arrived in the Spanish Canary Islands. Over that same period, the Senegalese navy has intercepted more than 9,000 migrants attempting to make the dangerous journey. Fatal shipwrecks are common and show no signs of slowing down. Our Senegal correspondents report from the capital Dakar and the northern city of Saint-Louis.
