Senator Sullivan urges strong military response to Iranian attacks on US forces

Retired Colonel Dan Sullivan discusses the need to reestablish deterrence with Iran.

Title: U.S. Senator Calls for Strong Response to Iran in the Wake of Recent Attacks

In the aftermath of the recent attacks against U.S. service members in the Middle East, GOP Senator Dan Sullivan has spoken out, urging President Biden to order a clear and overwhelming response that demonstrates to Iran and the world the consequences of targeting American military personnel or supporting such attacks.

Senator Sullivan, a retired colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, emphasized the importance of reestablishing deterrence with Iran. He highlighted that the Trump administration had effectively implemented a strategy to counter Iranian aggression, which included imposing massive sanctions on the country's oil and gas sector, withdrawing from the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), and eliminating Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani. Furthermore, he commended the Trump administration for launching the Abraham Accords, a peace initiative in the Middle East.

However, Senator Sullivan expressed concern that the Biden administration had reversed these policies, leading to a lack of deterrence and a rise in attacks against American personnel. With American allies becoming increasingly nervous about the current appeasement approach, he stressed the need to prioritize the security and stability of the region.

The Senator called for a twofold approach to reestablish deterrence: a kinetic response targeting Iranian leadership, oil and gas facilities, and navy shipping, while minimizing civilian casualties, and non-kinetic measures such as reimposing sanctions on Iran's oil and gas sector and ballistic missile program. He highlighted the significant increase in Iran's foreign reserves under the Biden administration's approach, reinforcing their ability to fund terrorist proxies such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.

Senator Sullivan also cautioned against putting additional pressure on Israel in response to the ongoing conflict with Gaza. He emphasized that such a move would only reinforce the perception that attacks against American personnel and allies are effective.

The Senator concluded by emphasizing the urgent need to shift from a reactive stance to a proactive one in dealing with global conflicts. He expressed concerns over the perceived weakness from the current administration and noted the signal it sends to authoritarian regimes.

The call for a robust and comprehensive response to Iran's aggression reflects growing concerns within the U.S. government about the need to protect American personnel and interests in the Middle East. As the situation unfolds, the Biden administration will need to carefully assess its approach to reestablishing deterrence while considering the potential consequences and complexities of future actions.
