Senator Suffers Broken Leg in Freak Accident During UConn Championship Parade

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal suffered a broken leg during Saturday’s UConn championship parade in downtown Hartford, and he has since been discharged from the hospital after surgery on Sunday.

During the parade to celebrate the school’s national championship in men’s basketball, a cameraman was walking backward and ran into the Connecticut Democrat. They both fell on the street after the collision. Blumenthal proceeded to get back up and finish the parade route despite the injury.

The 77-year-old tweeted an update on his injury status Saturday night hours after the parade.

“What can I say, I love a parade!” Blumenthal wrote. “Thanks to [Senator] Chris [Murphy] & everyone for the well wishes. I did indeed fracture my femur after a fellow parade goer tripped & fell on me during the parade today. Routine surgery tomorrow just to make sure everything heals properly. I expect a full recovery!”

The 2023 champions became the fifth UConn men’s basketball team to win the national title, adding to the program’s championships in 1999, 2004, 2011 and 2014. The UConn women’s basketball team has won 11 national titles.
