Senator Duped By Deep Fake Video Call Impersonating Ukrainian Official

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) speaks at a committee meeting after assuming the chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at the U.S. Capitol on Capitol Hill in Washington

Authorities are currently investigating a concerning incident involving a deep fake video call that successfully impersonated a high-ranking Ukrainian official. Democratic Sen. Benjamin Cardin recently disclosed that he had fallen victim to this deceptive scheme and promptly reported the matter to law enforcement.

Sen. Cardin revealed that he was lured into a video call under false pretenses, believing he was engaging with Dmytro Kuleba, the Ukrainian foreign minister. However, during the call, the impersonator began asking provocative foreign policy questions, prompting Cardin to realize the deception and terminate the conversation.
