Senate Majority Leader John Thune has expressed the Senate's commitment to swiftly confirm President Donald Trump's nominees, particularly advocating for the confirmations of Pete Hegseth as defense secretary and Kristi Noem as head of the Department of Homeland Security.
The Senate is scheduled to vote on Hegseth's confirmation as defense secretary by 9 p.m. ET on Friday, followed by a vote to break a filibuster on Noem's nomination.
Thune praised Hegseth, stating that he will bring a warrior's perspective to the role and prioritize warfighting over distractions, focusing on restoring America's strength and readiness.
Hegseth's confirmation process has faced allegations of sexual assault, alcohol abuse, and financial mismanagement, which he has denied. Despite opposition from GOP Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, the Trump administration continues to support Hegseth.
Thune also commended Governor Kristi Noem, highlighting her qualifications for the role of Secretary of Homeland Security. He further expressed his support for the March for Life demonstrators in Washington, DC, and announced his intention to address the attendees in person.
