The Senate is gearing up for a confirmation vote on President Donald Trump's nominee, former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, to lead the Interior Department. The upper chamber voted decisively to advance Burgum's nomination to a confirmation vote, with a 78-20 margin in favor.
Burgum, during his appearance before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee in mid-January, emphasized national security and the economy as his top priorities for the agency's leadership. He highlighted the impact of restricting energy production in the U.S., stating that it merely shifts production to countries like Russia and Iran, which could pose threats to national security.
When questioned by lawmakers, including Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono, about potential drilling for oil in national parks, Burgum reiterated his commitment to upholding the law and the Constitution in his role. He expressed support for advancing energy production for the benefit of the American people.
Prior to his nomination, Burgum served as the governor of North Dakota from 2016 to 2024. He also ran for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2024 election, focusing on energy and natural resources as key campaign issues. Although he participated in the first two Republican debates, Burgum did not qualify for the third debate and ended his presidential bid in December 2023. He subsequently endorsed President Trump for the GOP nomination ahead of the Iowa caucuses.
