The Senate has scheduled a 9 p.m. ET vote on Friday to confirm Pete Hegseth as the defense secretary. Hegseth is expected to be narrowly confirmed after breaking a Democratic-led filibuster with a 51-49 vote. However, the timing of the vote could be moved up earlier in the day if both sides come to an agreement.
Following the confirmation of Hegseth, the Senate will proceed to vote on breaking a filibuster for the nomination of Kristi Noem as the homeland security secretary. Noem is anticipated to easily surpass the simple-majority threshold for confirmation.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has indicated the possibility of weekend work to process the nominations of Noem and Scott Bessent for the Treasury Department. However, there is a chance that a deal may be reached to avoid working over the weekend and allow senators to salvage their weekend plans.
