Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., expressed confidence that the Senate would pass the stopgap spending bill that was overwhelmingly approved by the House late Friday. Schumer stated that he believes the Senate will also pass the bill soon to keep the government open.
While acknowledging that the bill may not include all the provisions Democrats had pushed for, Schumer highlighted significant victories for American families. These victories include emergency aid for communities impacted by natural disasters, no debt ceiling suspension, and a commitment to keeping the government operational without severe budget cuts. Schumer emphasized the importance of bipartisan cooperation in ensuring the government's continued operation.
The current measure differs from the original continuing resolution that Democrats had advocated for, which was abandoned following public opposition led by Elon Musk. The revised short-term bill, similar to the one that failed in the House on Thursday, does not incorporate the controversial debt ceiling suspension requested by President-elect Donald Trump.
Additionally, the bill includes provisions for economic relief for farmers and disaster aid for individuals affected by earlier storms in the year.
