Senate Democrats on the Intelligence Committee have raised alarm over the Trump administration's decision to grant billionaire Elon Musk and his team access to classified information and sensitive data as part of their efforts to restructure the federal government.
In a letter addressed to Trump's chief of staff, Susie Wiles, the lawmakers sought clarification on the security measures in place to prevent unauthorized disclosure of information by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is being overseen by Musk.
The senators highlighted that Musk's team now has access to computer systems containing potentially sensitive medical and financial records of millions of Americans, federal payroll data, classified documents, information from foreign intelligence partners, and details of undercover agents and intelligence sources.
Expressing concerns about national security and the privacy of Americans, the senators emphasized the need for stringent safeguards to prevent misuse or mishandling of the data. They also inquired whether Musk's team had engaged with U.S. intelligence officials to mitigate risks and protect classified information.
The senators underscored the potential repercussions of unauthorized disclosure, stating that valuable information could be exploited by foreign spy agencies, posing risks to lives and undermining national security efforts.
The letter, signed by seven Democrats from the Intelligence Committee and independent Sen. Angus King, highlighted the lack of transparency regarding DOGE's operations, staff appointments, and vetting procedures.
Meanwhile, concerns were also raised by Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut, who warned that the review of CIA staffing by the Trump administration could compromise the safety and mission of CIA employees in the field.
Despite the senators' inquiries, the White House has not yet responded to the concerns raised. Musk, on the other hand, defended his involvement in government initiatives, dismissing criticisms and asserting the necessity of his contributions.
