Senate Democrats, led by Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., blocked the advancement of the 'Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act' in a recent Senate session. The proposed measure aimed to mandate healthcare practitioners to provide life-saving care to babies born during attempted abortions and ensure their hospitalization.
Fetterman, a staunch supporter of a woman's right to make healthcare choices, opposed the bill, stating that criminalizing such choices was unjust. In a party-line vote, 52 Republicans supported moving the bill forward, while 45 Democrats and two independent senators aligned with the Senate Democratic Caucus voted against it.
The legislation required healthcare providers to treat babies born alive during abortions with the same level of care as any other newborn at the same gestational age. It also mandated immediate transportation and admission to a hospital for such infants, with no prosecution of the mother.
Pro-life advocates strongly criticized Fetterman's stance, accusing him of denying medical care to infants born alive after failed abortions. Lila Rose, president of Live Action, condemned the decision as 'pure evil,' while Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life of America used the term 'infanticide' in reference to Fetterman's position.
Katie Glenn Daniel, from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, highlighted the essence of the bill by pointing out that it was specifically designed to protect babies who are born alive and in need of life-sustaining healthcare.
