The Senate voted to confirm President Donald Trump's nominee, Pete Hegseth, as defense secretary after a contentious battle. The final vote was 51-50, with Vice President JD Vance breaking the tie. Three Republicans opposed the confirmation, including Senators Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Mitch McConnell.
Concerns were raised about Hegseth's behavior, including allegations of infidelity, sexual assault, and excessive drinking. Despite these accusations, the advocacy group Concerned Veterans for America praised his confirmation, citing an opportunity to prioritize national security.
All Democrats opposed the confirmation, while Hegseth's supporters highlighted his promise to address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion measures in the military. The nomination faced last-minute hurdles, including allegations of abuse by his ex-sister-in-law, which were denied by both Samantha Hegseth and Danielle Hegseth.

In addition to Hegseth's confirmation, former Space Force Lt. Col. Matthew Lohmeier and former Marine Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller were nominated to top Defense Department posts. Lohmeier was fired for criticizing diversity policies, while Scheller faced court-martial for criticizing military leaders over the Afghanistan withdrawal.
Hegseth, a 44-year-old Army National Guard veteran, has admitted to past indiscretions but has emphasized his commitment to his current wife and his military service. Despite his relative youth and inexperience compared to past defense secretaries, Republicans see him as a fresh perspective untainted by Pentagon establishment.
