This morning at 9 a.m., the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee is set to convene to vote on the confirmation of President Donald Trump’s secretary nominee, Doug Collins. Collins, a former House Republican from Georgia, has made commitments to both Democrats and Republicans regarding veterans’ care.
During his confirmation hearing, Collins assured Democrats that he would safeguard veterans’ care in the face of anticipated budget cuts and efficiency measures. He also pledged to Republicans that he would support a program enabling veterans to access healthcare outside the V.A. system.
Collins emphasized the VA’s primary goal of ensuring that services are delivered to veterans with utmost priority. Following the committee vote, Collins will proceed to seek confirmation from the full Senate. Given the bipartisan support for veterans’ care, his confirmation is expected to proceed smoothly without significant opposition.
A former Navy and Air Force reserve chaplain who served in Iraq, Collins held a seat in the House from 2013 to 2021. Notably, he defended President Trump during the 2019 impeachment inquiry.
