Senate Approves Temporary Government Spending Plan, Averts Shutdown

Looming deadline to avert US government shutdown on the hill in Washington, U.S.

In a late-night session, the Senate approved a temporary government spending plan to prevent a federal government shutdown. The legislation now awaits President Joe Biden's signature after a failed attempt earlier in the week due to President-elect Donald Trump's opposition.

The bill funds the government through March 14, setting the stage for another spending showdown in the early days of the upcoming Trump administration. The package includes crucial disaster relief funds for states impacted by hurricanes and other natural disasters.

Key Highlights of the Bill:
  • Approximately $100 billion allocated for natural disaster recovery efforts in 2023 and 2024.
  • $29 billion to replenish FEMA's Disaster Relief Fund, depleted by recent hurricanes and other calamities.
  • $10 billion in economic aid for struggling farmers facing lower commodity prices and higher supply costs.
  • Full federal funding for rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland, which collapsed earlier this year.
  • Extension of the farm bill for one year, impacting agricultural and nutrition assistance programs.
  • Extension of pandemic-era telehealth services in Medicare to facilitate remote care for seniors and individuals with disabilities.

The bill also addresses the impending debt ceiling issue, with plans to suspend it until January 30, 2027, to avoid a default. Additionally, efforts to reform pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) were discussed but not included in the final bill.

Furthermore, the legislation grants Washington, DC control over the RFK stadium area, potentially paving the way for the NFL's Washington Commanders to return to the location.

While the bill that was torpedoed by Trump included provisions for lawmakers' pay raises and restrictions on US investments in China, these elements were removed from the final package.

Overall, the approved spending plan addresses critical funding needs, disaster relief, and policy extensions, setting the stage for continued government operations and addressing key national challenges.
