Sen. Elizabeth Warren recently made comments regarding Israel's actions in Gaza, suggesting that international courts could interpret them as genocide. During a speech at the Islamic Center of Boston, Warren expressed her belief that what Israel is doing in Gaza is wrong. She stated that starving children within a civilian population and dropping bombs in densely populated areas are actions that she considers to be morally incorrect.
Warren emphasized the importance of focusing on the behavior itself rather than getting caught up in labels. She mentioned that her comments were related to the ongoing legal process at the International Court of Justice and did not specifically address whether genocide is occurring in Gaza.
In January, the International Court of Justice issued emergency measures directing Israel to prevent acts that could violate the Genocide Convention and ensure that its military does not engage in genocidal acts in Gaza.
Warren has been critical of the Biden administration's policies on Israel, advocating for a ceasefire and urging conditions on future aid to the country. Following the tragic deaths of seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen in an Israeli strike, Warren called for the protection of humanitarian workers and an immediate ceasefire to deliver essential humanitarian aid to Gaza.
