During a recent Senate Intelligence committee meeting, Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the committee, raised concerns about the judgment of Tulsi Gabbard, who has been nominated for the position of Director of National Intelligence (DNI). Warner emphasized that while Gabbard's service to the country is commendable, her judgment is crucial given the sensitive nature of the role.
Warner expressed unease over Gabbard's refusal to label Edward Snowden as a traitor during her confirmation hearing, calling it 'flabbergasting.' He questioned how Gabbard, if confirmed as DNI, would effectively lead the intelligence community and enforce laws when she had previously shown support for Snowden as a whistleblower.
However, Sen. Todd Young, the final GOP senator on the committee who had not disclosed his stance on Gabbard's nomination, announced his support for her. Gabbard reportedly assured Young in a letter that she would not make recommendations on Snowden's legal status in her capacity as DNI.
The committee is set to convene for a closed-door session to vote on advancing Gabbard's nomination to a full Senate floor vote. The outcome of this vote will determine whether Gabbard progresses in the nomination process to potentially become the next Director of National Intelligence.
