Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, who is President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for secretary of state, raised concerns about potential violations of the terms under which the US handed over control of the Panama Canal to Panama. Rubio expressed apprehension over the influence exerted by China on the canal, suggesting that it could be in violation of the original agreement.
During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio highlighted the issue of Chinese involvement in the canal, stating that while technically sovereignty has not been transferred to a foreign power, the control exerted by Chinese companies could potentially jeopardize the canal's security in times of conflict.
Rubio emphasized that Chinese influence over the canal is a significant concern that needs to be addressed. However, he also expressed a desire to continue collaborating with Panama on various shared interests, such as migration and other common issues.
President Trump has previously hinted at the possibility of reclaiming US control over the Panama Canal. In response, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino has asserted that the canal and its surrounding area rightfully belong to Panama. Additionally, a spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry has stated that China regards the canal as a neutral international waterway.
