Sen. Moreno Pushes For Immediate Action On Border Legislation

Recently inaugurated Sen. Bernie Moreno, representing Ohio, is eager to address the crisis at the southern border by swiftly moving legislation to President-elect Trump's desk. Moreno is confident that the proposed legislation could garner enough support on the Senate floor.

In an interview, Moreno emphasized the importance of fulfilling campaign promises, particularly regarding border security, which was a significant concern for voters during the election.

The Ohio Republican, who defeated incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown, stressed the urgency of tackling issues such as open borders and rising prices without delay.

Moreno outlined the key components of the proposed legislation, which include funding for deportations, securing the border, completing the border wall, implementing necessary technology, and ensuring resources for deportation efforts at scale.

Expressing optimism about the bill's prospects, Moreno asserted that it could reach President Trump's desk shortly after his inauguration.

However, passing such legislation in the Senate would require overcoming the legislative filibuster, as a minimum of 60 votes is needed for a measure to advance outside the budget reconciliation process. With a slim 53-vote majority, Republicans would need Democratic support to move the bill forward.

Moreno emphasized that border security is not a partisan issue but a matter of national importance, urging bipartisan cooperation on the issue.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune could play a pivotal role in bringing border-related bills to a vote and holding Democratic senators accountable on key GOP-led initiatives.

While Moreno advocates for immediate action on border legislation, some aspects of illegal immigration policy are expected to be included in a broader reconciliation bill addressing tax cuts, energy, and defense.

President Trump recently voiced his support for comprehensive legislation that focuses on securing the border, unleashing American energy resources, and enhancing tax cuts. He urged Republicans to unite and swiftly deliver on these priorities for the benefit of the American people.

As lawmakers gear up to address critical issues facing the nation, the debate over border security and immigration policy is poised to take center stage in the early days of the new Congress.
