Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat serving on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has expressed his desire for access to the FBI's background investigation on Pete Hegseth. Kelly mentioned that he and his colleagues are keen on reviewing the report, despite facing obstacles in obtaining it.
According to Kelly, the ranking member of the committee, Republican Senator Jack Reed, had made a request for the background investigation, but the request has not been fulfilled yet. Kelly highlighted that there have been instances in the past where the full committee was granted access to such reports, indicating a precedent for broader access.
Expressing his reservations about Hegseth's suitability for the position, Kelly emphasized the importance of thoroughly evaluating the nominee's background and qualifications. He reiterated his concerns about Hegseth's ability to effectively fulfill the responsibilities of the role in question.
Despite the current limitations on access to the FBI's background report, Kelly remains hopeful that Senator Roger Wicker, the GOP chair of the committee, may eventually authorize all members of the committee to review the document. It is noted that the standard protocol within the Armed Services Committee dictates that only the chair and ranking member are typically granted access to such sensitive information.
