Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, raised concerns about the security arrangements at a recent event involving former President Donald Trump. In a letter addressed to United States Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, Hawley highlighted allegations made by whistleblowers regarding the security detail at the event.
According to the whistleblowers, a significant portion of Trump's security detail during the event did not consist of Secret Service agents. Instead, personnel from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were reportedly assigned to the event, leading to concerns about their preparedness and experience.
The whistleblowers alleged that the security measures at the event were lacking. For instance, detection canines were not utilized to monitor entry and detect potential threats as is typically done at such events. There were also reports of individuals without proper designations gaining access to backstage areas, raising questions about the overall security protocols in place.
Hawley's letter to Mayorkas specifically mentioned that the majority of DHS officials present at the event were from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) rather than the Secret Service. This raised concerns as the HSI agents were reportedly unfamiliar with the standard security protocols usually followed at such events.
In response to these allegations, Hawley requested Mayorkas to provide answers to several questions regarding the security arrangements at the Trump campaign event.
