During President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, Democratic Sen. Chris Coons expressed his concern over the prominent presence of social media executives, particularly TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. Coons described it as 'striking' and suggested that it indicates a lack of attention to national security risks posed by the Chinese-owned app.
Coons emphasized the bipartisan support for a ban on TikTok due to national security concerns, with both Republicans and Democrats in Congress signaling their apprehension. He highlighted the potential risks associated with TikTok's ownership structure and referenced instances where the app had been used to influence elections in other countries.
President-elect Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Monday to delay the enforcement of the law banning TikTok in the US unless the app divests from its Chinese parent company. Despite this delay, Coons reiterated his stance on the necessity of banning TikTok, citing the widespread backing the ban received in Congress.
Additionally, Coons mentioned his confidence in Marco Rubio's confirmation as secretary of state, following Rubio's reassurances during his confirmation hearing regarding his qualifications and policy expertise for the role.
