Senator Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine, has reiterated her support for former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley for president, despite Haley no longer being in the race for the Republican nomination. Collins has confirmed that she will write in Haley's name on her ballot in November, rather than choosing between former President Trump or President Biden.
Collins' office has verified her intention to vote for Haley, stating that she had previously expressed her support for Haley over Trump. Collins mentioned, 'I will not be voting for either candidate. I am going to write in Nikki Haley’s name.'
Senator Collins had endorsed Haley late in the Republican primary, praising her as 'extremely well-qualified' and highlighting her energy, intellect, and temperament as qualities needed to lead the country during tumultuous times.
Despite Haley exiting the primary race following Collins' endorsement, the Maine senator's stance remained unchanged. Collins made it clear that she could not support former President Trump, citing her vote to convict him on the second impeachment charges related to the events of January 6, 2021, when some of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol.
Collins was among the seven Republican senators in 2021 who voted to convict Trump for allegedly inciting insurrection. Even though Trump has emerged as the presumptive Republican nominee and is set to face Biden in the upcoming election, Collins has stood firm in her decision to support Haley.
As of now, Trump's campaign has not provided any immediate comment on Collins' choice to write in Haley's name on her ballot. Collins' unwavering support for Haley underscores her principled stance in the political landscape.
