Selfish drivers parking all over city centre pavement fined

Merseyside Police swooped to punish a number of drivers who parked their cars across a city centre pavement this weekend.

So-called 'pavement parking' is a major issue across Liverpool, with frustrated members of the public regularly reporting vehicles being selfishly parked on pedestrian areas, making it difficult for people to get past - especially those in wheelchairs or parents with prams.

There have long been calls for more action to be taken against those who leave their cars in such places - and this weekend Merseyside Police appeared to step up their enforcement on the issue.

On Saturday evening, Merseyside Police's Roads Policing Unit shared an image of three cars parked in a line, all fully on the pavement in the Whitechapel area of Liverpool city centre. The same picture shows a Merseyside Police car pulled up next to them, with an officer having just placed tickets on each windshield of the offending vehicles.

The post from the force read: "These vehicles were all parked on the pavement on Whitechapel in the city centre, blocking it and causing pedestrians to walk into the road. All reported for causing an obstruction."

The move was praised by a number of twitter users. One said: "Good work, changing driver behaviour in this city will be a full time job but enforcement is the way forward."

Pavement parking is a huge problem in the city and especially in the city centre. In the summer, the city council devised a plan to try and limit the amount of vehicles parking on one particularly badly affected area.

The ECHO has been reporting for years on the issue of cars being parked on the pavement of The Strand in the city centre. Vehicles can regularly be seen lining the pavement area outside the Heavenly Desserts restaurant.

The council has now placed a number of large planters in the area outside the shop to try and stop vehicles parking there.
