Selena Gomez has been in the spotlight since she was 10-years-old for her acting and singing career. With this world fame her personal life - featuring several high profile romances - has been thrown into the spotlight too
While the ‘Lose You To Love Me’ singer’s most talked about relationship is undoubtedly her on-and-off romance with Justin Bieber, Gomez has also been linked to other singers (and a few actors) over the years.
Gomez recently confirmed she is happily single and has been for two years, saying that relationship-wise she is on "God's timing, not mine".
The Justin Bieber era
Cosmopolitan reports that Gomez and Bieber were first spotted together in 2010 having pancakes. The seemingly innocent short stack would set into motion a relationship with countless breakups and even more songs that would be inspired by each other (and analyzed by fans). For a while, things seemed to be going great for the celebrity couple known as Jelena.
In 2011, Bieber even rented the Staples Center in LA for a private dinner and a movie on the court. But breakup rumors started when Bieber was named in a paternity suit in November 2011 that was later determined to be false.
The two seemed to be alright afterwards, but in November 2012 they called it quits for the first time - although they were spotted together again the very next month.
This, of course, began a series of on-again, off-again moments that saw them through to the spring of 2018. And any hopes of a Jelena reunion were officially crushed when Bieber proposed to model Hailey Baldwin in July 2018 (the two would soon be married in September that same year).
Even though their relationship is over, the drama surrounding it didn’t exactly end. In March of 2019, Bieber took to Instagram to call a stop to the hateful comments directed towards Baldwin from Gomez fans.
During the lengthy post, he also addressed his relationship with Gomez, writing, “I absolutely loved and love Selena, she will always hold a place in my heart.”
Before the Biebs: Nick Jonas and Taylor Lautner
Back in 2008, Gomez dated Nick Jonas in a Disney channel match made in heaven. She even appeared in the Jonas Brothers’s ‘Burnin’ Up’ music video, which came out the same year Gomez and Jonas were said to be dating. Though it never became anything serious, the two were able to joke about a Central Park date gone wrong in 2018, when Jonas was a guest on BBC Radio 1.
Gomez has also been quoted as crediting Jonas with introducing her to Taylor Swift (Swift dated Nick’s brother Joe during the same time period). She called their friendship “the best thing we got out of those relationships” during a 2017 interview with Kiss UK radio.
Gomez also briefly dated actor Taylor Lautner in 2009. In the September cover story for Seventeen, Gomez explained to the magazine that the two met while she and Lautner were both in Canada working (she was filming Ramona and Beezus and Lautner was shooting The Twilight Saga: New Moon).
The pair ended their romance early on, but Gomez had nothing but nice things to say about Lautner, telling the magazine, “I went to Vancouver thinking I was going to focus on my work, but instead I got to meet him, and it ended up being the best thing ever.”
Rumored romances and a new relationship
During a brief break from Bieber in 2014, Gomez was linked to actor Orlando Bloom. Bieber was also rumored to have hooked up with Bloom’s ex, model Miranda Kerr, around the same time.
Though Cosmopolitan reports both Gomez and Bloom denied there was anything romantic between them (and Gomez and Bieber reunited a few months later), Bloom allegedly punched Bieber in Ibiza in July of that year. But that wasn’t the end of the Gomez-Bloom rumors, because in a true Hollywood twist, the two were photographed together again in May 2016.
In a less-dramatic coupling, Gomez was said to be dating DJ and producer Zedd in the winter of 2015 when the two were working together on their single ‘I Want You To Know.’ Neither confirmed the romance while they were together, but in July 2015, Gomez set the record straight in an interview, saying, “I adore Anton [Zedd] a lot and I definitely had a thing with him, which was nice.”
Zedd also spoke post-relationship, hinting that all of the attention played a part in why it ended in a 2017 interview with Billboard where he was quoted as saying, “She is one of the most talked about people in the world, but I had no idea how much that would change my life.”
In December 2015, Gomez and former One Direction singer Niall Horan created (very brief) buzz when they were spotted out together, which Gomez denied, explaining the two were just friends.
In early 2016, Gomez was seen out with Samuel Krost, a friend of model Gigi Hadid’s and later Fyre Festival’s booker. Though Gomez never confirmed the romance, Krost did in a now deleted Instagram post. According to Elle, the post read, "Selena is a real girl with a real heart and real feelings. All you superficial who are just unhappy with your love lives, understand that love is real. Although we have ventured on separate paths, at least I know that love exists. I love you, Sel."
In 2016, Gomez was said to be seeing singer Charlie Puth (the two released the song ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ that same year). Gomez never confirmed anything, but years later, Puth told Billboard that the relationship was “very short-lived.”
He also hinted that someone may have been to blame, saying, “It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind.”
One relationship that Gomez definitely confirmed during this time was with singer Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd. The pair were first spotted together in early 2017, and drama quickly followed when The Weeknd’s ex, model Bella Hadid, unfollowed Gomez on Instagram. But the two seemed to be going strong, traveling together, and making their red carpet debut at the Met Gala in May 2017.
Though the next few months saw Gomez attending The Weeknd’s concerts and even another red carpet couple moment, in October 2017, Gomez was back with Bieber.
They were seen on holiday at Laguna Beach as well as on dates around town, with Gomez posting a now deleted birthday tribute to Bieber on her Instagram in which she called him “super cool”.
They are believed to have split in March 2018, after a source told E! News, “Selena realized even though he’s made some positive improvements, they just aren’t a perfect match right now.”
Post-Bieber
While the release of her new single ‘Lose You to Love Me’ in October brought more Bieber buzz, it was rumors linking her to her exes that prompted Gomez to set the record straight on her dating life.
In early October, Gomez was linked yet again to One Direction member Niall Horan. Horan shut down rumours when he told Sirius XM that they were "good friends", who happened to "hang out all the time" as they were in the same circle.
Just a few weeks later, she was later seen with her ex Samuel Krost which led to speculation that the pair had gotten back together. Gomez took to her Instagram story, writing, “I am not dating anyone. I’ve been single for two years. I’m on God’s timing not mine.”
