Selena Gomez Opens Up About Mental Health Struggles In Documentary

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez recently reflected on her 2022 Apple TV+ documentary, My Mind & Me, which delved into her mental health struggles. The documentary captured Gomez's battle with suicidal thoughts, leading to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. During a panel discussion at SXSW in Austin, Texas, Gomez expressed regret over the negative self-talk she engaged in during the filming of the documentary, emphasizing the importance of speaking to oneself with kindness.

My Mind & Me, shot over six years, documented Gomez's challenges with body image issues, living with lupus, and the burnout she faced as a high-profile celebrity. Despite feeling 'terrified' to release the documentary, Gomez ultimately found a sense of release in sharing her story authentically, without hiding behind a curated image.

Gomez appeared on the panel alongside her mother, Mandy Teefey, with whom she launched the Wondermind mental health advocacy website. The decision to share her journey in the documentary was inspired by a conversation with her mother after watching the film Girl, Interrupted, which prompted Gomez to confront her feelings of not fitting into the entertainment industry.

During the panel discussion, Gomez emphasized the importance of allowing individuals to address their mental health struggles in their own time, noting that she had to hit rock bottom before she was ready to seek help. She expressed gratitude for the support she received and acknowledged that she is now in a better place.

Looking ahead, Gomez is gearing up to release her first album in four years, featuring music that reflects her newfound confidence and joy. She is also busy filming the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building and is set to star in a reboot of Wizards of Waverly Place, as well as portray singer Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic.

On the personal front, Gomez went public with her boyfriend, Benny Blanco, in December 2023. Sources close to the singer revealed that she is excited about their relationship and is introducing him to her inner circle, signaling a commitment to their partnership.
