NEW YORK CITY - Selena Gomez is back in her pop girl era with her new single "Love On." This time around, the artist has ditched her celebratory single persona and embracesd her new relationship status.
"Love On," produced by The Monster & Strangerz and Isaiah Tejada, dropped this past Thursday afternoon separating itself from the traditional midnight-Friday new music model. The track was co-written between Gomez, Julia Michaels, Michael Pollack, Tejada and The Monsters & Strangerz. It is Gomez's first release of 2024.
The song was first announced last week, with chic cover art and the release date on Instagram.
"Wait till I turn my love on," Gomez captioned the announcement.
The Mexican-descent singer then unveiled a short teaser for the track's video, which also premiered Thursday. In the snippet, Gomez cuddled with a puppy as a group of couples kissed nearby.
"Love On" also marks the first release since her relationship with fellow artist Benny Blanco became public.
The theme marks a departure from the upbeat "Single Soon," which was released in December and coincidentally produced by Blanco. In this track, the singer is enamored by her freedom and independence from relationships.
Now, two months later, as her relationship with the producer heats up (particularly in social media), the new single captures the feeling of finding a great connection with someone, which she communicates through her risqué and tongue in cheek verses.
"This doesn't have to be some sort of mathematical equation," Gomez sings. "Slip off your jeans, slide in the sheets, screaming 'yes' in quotations."
Both "Love On" and "Single Soon"— which debuted at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100— are expected to appear on Gomez's upcoming fourth album, which the Rare Beauty founder has not yet announced. She has, however, confirmed that a new LP is in the works, telling Vanity Fair earlier in February that her follow-up to 2020's "Rare" will be "really powerful, strong, very pop."
