Seiko recently returned to Phuket for its fifth Save The Ocean project to help restore a sustainable environment for local communities and instil marine conservation.

Previous activities were held in Racha Islands in Phuket, Kradan Island in Trang and Thalane Bay in Krabi. The fifth edition took managing director Hiroyuki Akashi, brand ambassador Sunny Suwanmethanont and Seiko staff to Siray Island, off Phuket's southeast coast.

Also known as the "Pearl of the Andaman", Phuket is a world-famous tourist destination while Siray is one of its sleepy small islands and home to sea gypsies, who have long been based in Laem Tukkae (Gecko Cape).

Seiko and the Laem Tukkae community worked together on this year's Save The Ocean project. They initiated the Fish Home Project at Sunrise Bay, where 10 nurseries will help increase fish populations, and in turn support the livelihood of the local fishermen.

The Japanese watchmaker also partnered with SCG and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation for another marine conservation activity at Hat Nopparat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi province.

SCG supported artificial coral reefs that will be placed in Plaew Bay. Produced with eco-friendly materials and 3D cement printing technology, the artificial reefs feature a surface that attracts coral larvae and promotes their natural growth while the complex structure makes an inviting home for marine life enriching the ecosystem. A part of the proceeds from the sales of Seiko Prospex sport watches will support the Save The Ocean activities.
