Bus services across Sefton will undergo major changes this year.
Some services will be axed and the frequency of other routes reduced. The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority said the proposed changes are necessary due to a combination of falling passenger numbers, rising inflation, and reduced funding from the central government.
It is hoped the changes will improve links across the Sefton bus network and will come into effect on September 4 of this year. Here is a list of all the proposed changes across Sefton.

Proposed changes
144 Service - Bootle and Netherton Circular
Monday – Saturday: No change. Evening route Monday – Saturday serves Millers Bridge and runs into Bootle Strand. Evenings & Sunday frequency reinstated to every 60 minutes
135 Service - Aintree Station to Bootle
Monday to Friday; Frequency increased to every 60 minutes Saturday; Frequency increased to every 60 minutes. Sunday; Frequency increased to every 60 minutes. Journeys no longer operate via Millers Bridge. This provision now covered by revised evening & Sunday route of 144.
44 Arriva - Formby to Crossens
Every 60 minutes (Monday – Sunday) Formby - Crossens. Journeys Now operate through Ainsdale and around Woodvale. Hourly link to Southport Hospital remains.
49 Arriva (New Number 45) - Crossness to Woodvale
New Number 45 every 60 minutes (Monday – Sunday) Formby - Crossens Follows the 49 route to Ainsdale, then the current 44 route to Formby, where it does the reverse of the 44, Ravens Meol Lane, Queens Road, Ward Avenue, Formby Bridge, Duke Street. Route omits Gleneagles in Ainsdale.
41 Arriva (new service) - Circular Service Crossens via Ainsdale
Departs Crossens at 00 & 20, past the hour, Monday – Saturday daytime to create a combined 10-minute frequency on the common sections. Service runs via Crossens Churchtown, Southport, Southport Hospital, Liverpool Road, Ainsdale. Route omits Gleneagles in Ainsdale.
42 Arriva (new service) - Circular Service to Crossens via Ainsdale
42 Circular Service (reverse of the 41 routes). Departs Crossens at 30 & 50, past the hour, Monday – Saturday daytime to create a combined 10-minute frequency on the common sections. Every 30 minutes (Monday – Sunday) Crossens to Ainsdale.
300 Arriva - Queen Square Bus Station to Southport
Monday to Friday; No Change. Saturday; Frequency reduced to every 60 minutes. Sunday; No Change. Evenings remain 60 minutes: Lydiate to Queen Square.
310 Arriva - Liverpool to Maghull & Skelmersdale
Monday to Friday; Liverpool - Skelmersdale every 60 minutes. Retain journeys between Liverpool & Maghull to provide service every 30 minutes. Saturday; Liverpool – Skelmersdale every 60 minutes. Retain journeys between Liverpool & Maghull to provide service every 30 minutes. Sunday; No Change.
54 Arriva - Liverpool to Thornton Circular
Monday to Friday; No Change. Saturday; No Change. Sunday; Reduced to every 60 Minutes.
55 Arriva - Liverpool to Old Roan
Monday to Friday; No Change. Saturday; No Change. Sunday; Reduced to every 60 Minutes.
58/58A Arriva - Liverpool to Netherton
Monday to Friday; No Change. Saturday; reduced to every 60 minutes. Sunday; No Change.
62 Arriva - Bootle to Penny Lane
Monday to Friday; reduced to every 60 minutes from 22:00. Saturday; reduced to every 60 minutes from 22:00. Sunday; Evenings reduced to every 60 minutes from 21:00.
63 Arriva - Bootle to Aintree Circular
Hourly phasing in until 06:30 Monday – Saturday. Monday – Sunday: No Change.
60 Arriva - Bootle to Aigburth Vale
Monday to Friday; reduced to every 60 minutes from 22:00. Saturday; reduced to every 60 minutes from 22:00. Sunday; reduced to every 60 minutes from 21:00.
81 Arriva - Bootle Bus Station to Liverpool John Lennon Airport / Speke
Monday to Friday; reduced to every 30 minutes, Saturday; No Change, Sunday; No Change – No Service. Between Hunts Cross and Bootle Bus Station, the 81 and 81A operate with a combined daytime frequency of every 15 minutes
81A Arriva - Bootle Bus Station to Liverpool John Lennon Airport / Speke
Monday – Friday; reduced to every 30 minutes, Saturday; No Change - 30-minute frequency, Sunday; No Change - 30-minute frequency. Between Hunts Cross and Bootle Bus Station, the 81 and 81A operate with a combined daytime frequency of every 15 minutes.
121 Service - Aintree to Broadway
Every 60 minutes (Monday – Saturday evenings and all day Sunday)
159 Service - Walton Park to Aintree Hospital
Service now operates Walton Park to Aintree Hospital all day, every day.
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority are asking people to share their opinions on the new bus routes and this can be done here. The LCR will take all feedback into consideration before making a final decision.
