Seer who set self on fire in Rajasthan to protest illegal mining dies

ALWAR/JAIPUR: Seer Vijay Das, who attempted self-immolation in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur three days ago in protest against illegal mining, was declared dead at a Delhi hospital on Saturday. His body was transported to Barsana in UP for last rites.

Sources said Das, who had sustained 80% burns, was shifted to Delhi’s Sardarjung Hospital on Thursday. A green corridor was created to shift him to the national capital as his condition was deteriorating.

On Wednesday, when Das attempted self-immolation, senior officers of the police and administration took the seer to a local hospital. Locals and sadhus had been demanding a ban on mining in Deeg, Kaman and Nagar areas of Rajasthan for more than 500 days as they claimed that the area is surrounded by sacred hills.
