See inside one of Bristol's oldest pubs Ye Shakespeare after major refurbishment

One of Bristol's oldest pubs has reopened following a major refurbishment, which saw it close for almost one month.

As its name suggests, Ye Shakespeare on Victoria Street is a truly historic pub, which dates all the way back to 1636.

The building's first use wasn't as a pub however, but instead as a dairy, before its licence was granted in the mid-1800s.

For the past three and a half weeks, fans of the iconic inn have had to go elsewhere for their pints, while a major £130,000 overhaul was carried out inside.

Manager Andrew Shaw, who leases the pub from Stars Pubs and Bars, part of the Heineken group, told Bristol Live why he decided to carry out the extensive work.

"We've had the pub for five years now and I just felt that it needed a bit of a refresh," said the 39-year-old, who runs the pub alongside his dad, David.

"It was looking a bit tired and run-down, so along with our contractors we've worked hard over the past three and a half weeks bringing it back up to standard.

"The interior is far more contemporary and modern now, which we feel makes it a far more attractive place for people come and enjoy a few drinks."

Andrew, who also runs the Portwall Tavern pub in Redcliffe, said making improvements such as this is vital in Bristol's competitive and ever-changing landscape.

The thing people have been most impressed with since the relaunch, he added, is how there is now far more space.

"We got rid of a bulky bar at the back of the pub which took up loads of space and replaced it with a bigger front bar area," he added.

"We also moved the men's toilets to the back of the pub which is a far better location for them. These changes have created more space and left the pub with a more open plan feel.

"That's what people have been most surprised and impressed with so far."

Ye Shakespeare also has a new menu with a wider range of vegan and vegetarian food, as well as new beers including DayTime IPA and bottled vegan beers.

Its front facade has also had a makeover, with the black and white aesthetic ditched in favour of a colourful revamp, although Andrew said he wanted to keep the 'traditional feel'.
