Tesco shoppers were surprised to see security tags strapped to plastic containers of milk in the supermarket. Shops have recently taken to putting tags on a number of high-worth food items, including baby formula and meat.
The prices of food across the board have increased in the last 12 months thanks to rising inflation - currently standing at a little over 11%. The price of low-fat milk has seen one of the largest increases - now costing an average of 47.9% more than it did a year ago.
On Monday, the majority, of the milk containers in the Tesco Extra store in Pool, near Camborne, had individual plastic security tags attached, reports CornwallLive.
A member of staff said that the store has suffered a spate of thefts of milk - especially of four-pint containers.
Tesco has denied this was the reason for the tagging and said it was down to "human error". The supermarket giant said a small amount of milk at the Pool store had been incorrectly tagged and the tags have now been removed.
A Tesco spokesperson said: "We do not have a policy to place security tags on fresh milk. A very small amount of milk was incorrectly tagged today in our Redruth Extra store and these tags have now been removed. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused."
