Security forces in Pakistan conducted a raid on a militant hideout in Karak, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan. The operation, based on intelligence, resulted in an intense shootout that led to the death of six militants, as confirmed by the military.
The military did not provide specific details about the militants killed in the raid, but such operations are typically targeted at groups like the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The TTP, an ally of the Taliban in Afghanistan, has increased its attacks in Pakistan following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in 2021.
Simultaneously, a significant operation is underway in Kurram, another district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militants have been targeting Shiites and security forces escorting aid trucks for residents affected by the conflict. Recent arrests of 48 suspects, accused of attacking aid truck escorts and Shiites, have been made by security forces in the region.
Kurram has been isolated from the rest of the country since November due to clashes between Shiite and Sunni tribes, prompting the government to block roads. The ongoing operation aims to restore order in the region and reopen a crucial road leading to Kurram, which was closed after insurgents killed five soldiers escorting aid trucks.
