Secrets behind popularity and growth of Mapperley

Business owners in one of Nottingham's most popular suburbs to live have spoken about what makes their area so special. Mapperley has been praised for being a vibrant area, home to a wealth of trendy bars, coffee shops and supermarkets that cater to both the young and old.

Of course, businesses have been forced to change and adapt since Covid, but it appears many continue to do well in the usually bustling Mapperley Top.. Owners and managers have stated that hard work and new additions, such as new cocktail menus and money spent on new refurbishments, have helped reel customers into Mapperley's stores.

So we checked out just some of the places currently driving the Mapperley high street forward, and some you may not have heard of.

Jack Woodward, assistant manager at The Old Flower Shop, said: "We've changed a lot since Covid, we're going in a different direction now. We're closing next week for refurb for 10 days.

"A complete overhaul of the interior so trying to make it a bit more modern and a bit comfier. We're aiming for more breakfast and dinner rather than just pub.

"At the weekends we get a lot of young people for drinks, we get a lot of middle-aged people for drinks too. In the evenings we get groups of ladies who like to come in and grab a bottle of wine.

"Anyone's welcome of course. Lots of people come in for drinks rather than go into town, it's just nicer.

"There's still a lot of shops and stuff but there are loads of nice places in Mapperley to go now."

The Wine Room

The owner of The Wine Room, Peter Brown, said: "We've been here four years in October. It's needed a lot of work putting since Covid. We've been exploring options pushing forward and spent a lot of money on furniture and a new cocktail menu.

"We're not crazy expensive but we want to compete of course with all of the other bars. I have another bar in the city but Mapperley is an up-and-coming area.

"And people from all over come in to sit down for a drink all the time."

The Cake Solution

The Cake Solution is a niche cake store on Mapperley high street which offers a diverse range of cakes from baked cheesecakes, mudcakes to sponge cakes. Formerly The Cheesecake Shop, Solution went through a rebranding last year and now offers a range of cakes, each with its own 'unique' recipe.

One reviewer wrote: "Absolutely fantastic celebration cakes, great value and so tasty!"

The Plainsman

With its welcoming outdoor area and cosy interior, the Plainsman is one of Mapperley's hotspots for day drinkers and evening-goers. Tucked away behind another popular Mapperley pub - the Woodthorpe Top - it might be easy to miss this one.

But if you're a lover of good pub grub and a variety of beer choices, you ought to check The Plainsman out. They also offer Sky Sports if that's your thing.

One happy customer said: ""Fantastic atmosphere good beer lovely staff good food."
