The US Secret Service has shot an armed man near the White House following a confrontation, the agency confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday when officers engaged in an "armed confrontation" with a man previously flagged by local police as a "suicidal individual", who was believed to be travelling to Washington DC from Indiana.
Secret Service officers located the man's vehicle and soon spotted an individual on foot matching the description provided by local authorities.
"As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel," the Secret Service said in a statement on X posted by spokesperson Anthony Guiglielmi.
The suspect was transported to hospital, where his condition remains unknown.
The Secret Service's statement added that no injuries were reported among its personnel, and the incident is currently under investigation.
Donald Trump was not in the White House at the time of the incident, as he was visiting his Florida home, Mar-a-Lago, this weekend.
