Secret underground bar set to launch beneath the original Coronation Street cobbles

A secret ‘gin speakeasy’ is all set to open up in Manchester’s burgeoning St. John’s neighbourhood. Called Project Halcyon, it’s the project of the Zymurgorium Distillery, a craft gin distillery that was operating prior to the pandemic.

It will now be launching an underground bar at the Department Bonded Warehouse, the refurbished 1800s red brick building on the Old Granada Studios site, and beneath the original cobbles of the Coronation Street set.

Project Halycon will feature a seasonal cocktail menu, using craft spirits and liqueurs actually produced on the site of the distillery, and a dedicated absinthe bar, while the parties it will be throwing will boast DJs, live music, spoken word and comedy.

Aaron Darke, owner of Zymurgorium and Project Halcyon said: “This bar and space is a gift to Manchester from us, so after a challenging two years for everyone we were eager to open the doors once again. We are proud to be relaunching this exquisite space which we believe is now better than ever with a series of exclusive events that will establish it as a must-visit for anyone in Manchester.

“Our company motto is ‘make every moment epic’ and Project Halcyon truly does this. The walls of Department Bonded Warehouse are permeated with memories of the incredible TV broadcasted from the site and we wanted to celebrate this and provide a space where new memories and experiences can be made.”

Anthony Powell, managing director of Department, said: “Project Halcyon is a great addition to Bonded Warehouse and provides the perfect place for people to unwind and enjoy some amazing craft spirits that are distilled on-site, even having the opportunity to see how the magic happens for themselves.

“We look forward to welcoming our community and the wider public to the unique space for a one-of-a-kind experience.”

The space will also run masterclass sessions and spirit tastings. Opening night is November 2, with a Day of the Dead celebration. Entry can be arranged by emailing info@projecthalcyondistillery.com, while it's fully open to the public from November 10, starting with its Project Gelos comedy night. It will be open from Thursday to Sunday nights from then on.
