Second new roller-skating rink is set to open in Manchester

You wait a number of years for a decent roller-skating rink to arrive in Manchester, and then two come along at once. Or so the phrase goes.

Good Life Skates, a new roller rink at Depot Mayfield, will be opening its doors on June 1, it’s been confirmed. The rink takes up an impressive 8000 sq ft of space at the foodhall and beer garden, just by Piccadilly Station.

The rink is perched on the mezzanine level of Escape To Freight Island, giving skaters a top-down view of the food stalls, bars and punters below. As well as catering for individual skaters, groups and families, the mezzanine is also available for private hire too, with its own adjacent private room.

It’s the second roller-skating rink set to open in Manchester this summer. Intergalactic-themed Paradise Skate World is due to open the day after Good Life Skates on June 2 at the Great Northern Warehouse.

Slightly smaller at 6000 sq ft, the sprung wooden rink has been devised by some of the team behind Junkyard Golf, and is situated in the original Junk Yard venue. It’ll feature a central roll-up bar area, and custom sculptures.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Junkyard Golf’s Sophie-Larissa Houghton said: “We really love taking old school, retro projects and reinventing them. We’re really into the whole LA and Miami beach style, and it’s kind of been something that we’ve always had on our radar, maybe for the past four years or so.

“There’s just nowhere cool where you can go and roller skate and get cool cocktails.”
