Second man arrested after Newton Mearns 'creeps tried to get schoolgirl into car'

A second man has been arrested after two men allegedly tried to entice a schoolgirl into a car in East Renfrewshire.

Glasgow Live reported that the 14-year-old was reportedly targeted in Harvie Avenue, Newton Mearns on Wednesday. It's claimed two men tried to persuade the teen to get into their motor, sparking a police investigation.

Greater Glasgow Police Division launched an appeal on Friday morning. At around 2pm that same day officers revealed that a man had been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged incident.

The 32-year-old was due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday with a report due to be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A force spokesperson said on Friday: "A 32-year old man has been arrested and charged by officers in Glasgow. It follows an incident on Wednesday, 22 June, 2022 in Harvie Avenue, Newton Mearns where efforts were made by two men to persuade a 14-year-old girl into a vehicle.

"The man is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday, June 27. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

On Tuesday police confirmed that a further man had been arrested in connection. The 18-year-old is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Greater Glasgow Police Division said: "Officers have arrested a further man in connection with an incident in Harvie Avenue, Newton Mearns where efforts were made by two men to persuade a 14-year-old girl into a vehicle. The 18-year-old man is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday, June 29.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
